Example of rapid prototyping in practice. SLA, or resin 3D printing (additive manufacturing), offers a number of advantages. The main one is high detail and low surface roughness. The surface of the parts is very similar to injection-molded parts, making products from this technology especially popular as visual prototype alternatives to injection-molded parts.
Let’s discuss the materials in more detail. In the group of large-format resins, we offer several options.
For the SLA 600 machine, with a maximum build volume of 580×580×380 mm, white, black, and transparent resins are available. All are primarily intended as prototyping resins, but in many cases can serve as end-use functional parts. It is important to be aware of the limitations of resins—they are relatively brittle compared to thermoplastics. Also, prolonged exposure to UV light without a protective coating can degrade them over time. The transparent resin is visually interesting and is supplied tinted in oil, which creates a glaze and a texture similar to glass. It is therefore suitable for prototypes or functional parts that are either optical in nature or visually transparent, simulating glass or transparent plastics.
For the SLA 800 machine, with a maximum build volume of 780×780×480 mm, only white and white HT (with higher heat resistance up to 72°C) resins are currently available. Standard white resin has a heat resistance of 59°C. Due to their good price and availability, these resins are also suitable for large parts or small-batch production in the hundreds to thousands of pieces.
SLA 3D printing is known for producing high-quality prints with smooth surfaces and intricate details, making it ideal for prototypes, concept models, and parts with complex geometries. However, it is important to consider the material’s mechanical limitations and UV sensitivity when choosing SLA for functional parts.
