Flexible Bumpers
- In addition to rigid materials, additive manufacturing (3D printing) can also utilize flexible materials across a wide range of Shore hardness scales,
- It’s important to note that, besides the hardness of the input material, with FDM/FFF technology we can integrate so-called internal infill into the more massive parts of models. This infill can have various structures, as shown in the photo below, and also different densities. This allows us to set the optimal level of flexibility of the part across an almost infinite range of elasticity. It’s even possible to fill stiffer areas with more material and more flexible areas with less,
- This opens up a whole range of entirely new applications that were previously not possible due to technological limitations,
- In this particular case, we used TPU 95A material and, through testing, set the optimal shape and degree of internal infill. These are flexible bumpers that cushion painted parts on the production line,
- With this shape, it was difficult and expensive to produce the necessary units for the line using conventional methods,
- Therefore, we proposed an additive manufacturing approach, which in this case proved to be very advantageous in terms of functionality, delivery speed, and cost.
